Summary

The bestselling author of The Designer presents a sweeping story of blind faith, family allegiance and how love makes one man question everything he thought he knew。

Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich。 So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged。

His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for。 He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment。 It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo。 But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes。

When Allied bombers fill the skies of Germany, Max is forced to abandon all dogma and face the brutality of war in order to defend precious lives。 But what will it cost him?

Excellent story that is riveting and captivating。 Hard read but probably close to the truth and hard to imagine。 This story evokes many emotions during the read。 Loved it!

Enjoyable but heart rendering。I enjoyed the book although it is difficult to like it’s content。 It gives a new perspective of Jewish life in Nazi controlled Germany other than all we hear of in the concentration camps。 Life, being Jewish at this time, was horrendous wherever they found themselves。

Keeps Your Interest! This book kept me interested to see what would happen next。 It incorporated many historical facts while also giving personal views of what happened in World War 2。

This was so powerful, raw and so real。The book was engaging from the very beginning, i was hooked immediately, and felt so close to the characters that i felt actual pain as they suffered throughout the book。The author is a real mastermind, he succeeded in describing the scenes of destruction and pain so vividly that you would almost feel squeamish of how much you felt what was written。The character development was immaculate, even during their hardships and despair, Lola and Max went through a This was so powerful, raw and so real。The book was engaging from the very beginning, i was hooked immediately, and felt so close to the characters that i felt actual pain as they suffered throughout the book。The author is a real mastermind, he succeeded in describing the scenes of destruction and pain so vividly that you would almost feel squeamish of how much you felt what was written。The character development was immaculate, even during their hardships and despair, Lola and Max went through a lot to grow up as human beings and they showed me how love is more powerful than politics and race。I really enjoyed it。*I received an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review via netgalley and the publisher* 。。。more

Wow!I could not put this book down! There were parts of the book where I was angry, upset that people can treat each other so badly, and other parts where I cried。 This story is of a woman who endures so much but finds strength in herself, that she never knew she had。 Highly recommend

While this was certainly not my favorite in historical fiction, it was not a bad choice either。 I chose this book as an Amazon prime first read and I think I would have been disappointed if I had paid full price for it。 The storyline got to the point very quickly, slowed down in the middle with a few twists and a lot of death, and then wrapped up quickly at the end。 It was quite predictable and more of a romance than a historical fiction novel, in my opinion。

If only people today could learn from the past。。。The story was riveting。 It conveys the viciousness of the Nazi regime but focuses on the normal person's fear and desire to make it through a horrible time, whether that person was Jewish or fallen Nazi who slowly comes to see what is actually happening。 If only people today could learn from the past。。。The story was riveting。 It conveys the viciousness of the Nazi regime but focuses on the normal person's fear and desire to make it through a horrible time, whether that person was Jewish or fallen Nazi who slowly comes to see what is actually happening。 。。。more

Strong characters and plot that movesAs a reader of historic fiction, I appreciated the changes of events that kept the last years of WWII full of changes for the characters and the reader。 I cared about the people and their risks and struggles。 There were plenty of villains and heroes, but the main characters were vulnerable and not always admirable, but almost always likeable。 This was a good read。 Boomer 66

This story was much better than I anticipated。Lola and Heidi are two young Jewish girls being hidden in the attic by Magda, whose son Max is a high ranking soldier in the German army。 After injury sends him home to recuperate, he discovers his mother’s secret guests and has to decide between protecting his mother and the girls or doing his duty to the German army。The story grips you from start to finish and is beautifully written。 I won’t say anything else as I don’t want to spoil it!

Horrors of war entangles the lives of a German & Jewish family I liked the story of this Nazi SS who becomes injured & sent home for recuperation, only to find his Mother harboring two Jewish sisters。 The horrible conditions of war that befall them makes an incredible read。The facts of such made me question some of my learned history, but it is a work of fiction & therefore well worth reading, maybe eye-opening。

Jewishness German and the inhumanity of war abd of course love If you want to get the stupidity of war and find some surprises along the way then this is a book that you will find both sad and uplifting

Definitely worth readingThis is one of best stories I have read in quite some time。 The characters are so complex that you actually feel as though you know them。 The story itself is extremely well written and makes it impossible to put down。

This book kept my interest on a all-to-familiar storyline about Hitler the third Reich, the Nazi party and the persecution of the Jews during WWII。 It attempted to use two very different characters to try to show how even people with radically different perspectives and backgrounds can grow to see each others love and losses under extreme conditions。 It presented different points of view of a young Jewish girl and a young German officer and how they evolved in their understanding of each others This book kept my interest on a all-to-familiar storyline about Hitler the third Reich, the Nazi party and the persecution of the Jews during WWII。 It attempted to use two very different characters to try to show how even people with radically different perspectives and backgrounds can grow to see each others love and losses under extreme conditions。 It presented different points of view of a young Jewish girl and a young German officer and how they evolved in their understanding of each others experiences。 。。。more

Insight into Germany at the end of the warI almost gave it 4 as it was a bit staged at times but I was interested in details which I hadn't known before, like the suffering and brutality inflicted on everyone because of Germany's refusal to admit defeat。 Not for the faint hearted。 Insight into Germany at the end of the warI almost gave it 4 as it was a bit staged at times but I was interested in details which I hadn't known before, like the suffering and brutality inflicted on everyone because of Germany's refusal to admit defeat。 Not for the faint hearted。 。。。more

THE EFFECTS OF THIS STORY WILL FOREVER REMAIN WITHIN YOU。This book is so well written, it will stay in my mind forever! Book ReviewI really enjoyed this book!! I kept wanting to know more, so I couldn't put it down。 Some parts were utterly shocking and wishing things didn't have to be that way, but it was war and many awful things happened。 Lola was such a strong character and I enjoyed her story immensely。。。 Great book!!! Before reading this, I saw the number of positive reviews but didn't read any of them。 I didn't read the summary either。 I went in blind。 I came out on the other end a true fanatic。Usually WWII books focus on fighting the resistance and are one sided, but The Girls in the Attic really showed that the war was multi-dimensional。 It showed not only what it took to survive, but how we might all be more alike (human) than we are different。 I loved the characters and the way they interacted。 Their fie Before reading this, I saw the number of positive reviews but didn't read any of them。 I didn't read the summary either。 I went in blind。 I came out on the other end a true fanatic。Usually WWII books focus on fighting the resistance and are one sided, but The Girls in the Attic really showed that the war was multi-dimensional。 It showed not only what it took to survive, but how we might all be more alike (human) than we are different。 I loved the characters and the way they interacted。 Their fiery spirits really show the readers how the "other side" may have felt。 The growth of the characters was outstanding。I listened to the audiobook and was absolutely blown away。 Using amazing accents for each character that were true to the natural way one might speak really brought this book to a new level。This is definitely a historical fiction book I will recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre。Thank you Brilliance Audio for allowing me to listen and give my honest opinion。 。。。more

Most stories of this type describe too many mundane events。 This story had all the best things the others have but was also full of riveting events。 None of the main characters were perfect。 Most were all too human making mistakes。 The preacher/saint was hung by piano wire for standing up to the Nazis yet he raised his son with too much discipline and too little love。 I thought this book came across as a real story。 I felt fear as the main characters did。 I rejoiced when they did。 Sometimes I lo Most stories of this type describe too many mundane events。 This story had all the best things the others have but was also full of riveting events。 None of the main characters were perfect。 Most were all too human making mistakes。 The preacher/saint was hung by piano wire for standing up to the Nazis yet he raised his son with too much discipline and too little love。 I thought this book came across as a real story。 I felt fear as the main characters did。 I rejoiced when they did。 Sometimes I lost track that I was only reading a book and not actually there。 。。。more

A story to revisit time and again。 This book, the storyline, kept me coming back to it。 The characters are well drawn, and you feel a part of the action。The only thing that did bother me was there was some repetition in the love story aspect。 While it is an important aspect of the plot, it almost bogged it down at times。Still。 I'm sure I'll revisit this book one day。 A story to revisit time and again。 This book, the storyline, kept me coming back to it。 The characters are well drawn, and you feel a part of the action。The only thing that did bother me was there was some repetition in the love story aspect。 While it is an important aspect of the plot, it almost bogged it down at times。Still。 I'm sure I'll revisit this book one day。 。。。more

A different WWII historical novel。This book is remarkable。 The whole WWII story is unbelievable but this book tells it from a different perspective in that it was about a young Jewish girl who spent her developing years in hiding。 The descriptions of the bombing were told so vividly along with the aftermath that you almost felt like you were there seeing it all。 I guess a one-word description about the entire book is just WOW!

SoberingHard to read but with a strong central character。 It genuinely felt as though the author had lived the story。

An awesome story!I loved this book, and author。 It was so well written。 It was an emotional story of a strong-willed girl。 The historical story was very educational。 I recommend this book to anyone。

WWII historical fiction that does not take place in a Concentration Camp。 We find ourselves at the lose of the war in Germany。 A story about how humans can change if we truly get to know one another。 The dialogue between Max and Lola was simplistic in the first 25% of the novel but improved as we progressed further into the story。 Enjoyed this fresh look at a part of the war not typically covered in historical fiction。
